The rosary and the Rue du Bac medal
A rosary is prayed decade by decade: an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be, while thinking about a moment in the lives of Jesus and Mary. At its center, this one carries the Miraculous Medal, which Saint Catherine Labouré said the Virgin Mary showed her in 1830, in the convent chapel at 140 Rue du Bac, Paris. Its popular name came from the many favors people reported after receiving it. The crucifix at the end is where the prayer begins. In polished stainless steel, silver or gold tone, it can be kept close and taken in hand to pray.
Giving it as a gift
From a godparent, it is a fitting first communion or confirmation gift for a child learning the rosary. It also suits Easter or Christmas, for someone who wants to keep a rosary near them through the day.
