The Sacred Heart is the heart of Jesus, often shown crowned with flames, wrapped in thorns and topped by a cross. Devotion to it spread from the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun at Paray-le-Monial in France, between 1673 and 1675.
