Most crucifixes show Christ on the cross at the hour of his death. A risen Christ image shows the next part of the story: the figure stands before the cross with open arms, alive. The Gospels place the empty tomb on the first day of the week, and Saint Paul writes that if Christ is not risen, faith is in vain. Some churches hang a risen Christ above the altar for that reason, to put Easter at the center. Here the image is set on a polished cross and hung on a pearl chain, in silver, gold or black.
