The red cross of the Templars

The Templars first wore a plain white mantle, granted at the Council of Troyes in 1129. In 1147, Pope Eugene III allowed them to add a red cross, which became the mark of the order. The red is often read as the blood of martyrs, the white as a life given to God: the vows of a knight who was also a monk. Today the image is worn less as a memory of the Crusades than as a sign of standing firm in faith. This round medal shows a sword and a shield bearing the red cross, set against a textured background, in polished stainless steel.

Giving it as a gift

Give it at Christmas or on Father's Day to someone who sees faith as something to stand up for. It also suits a son or grandson who loves history.
