Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 50 cm (20").
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm (2") more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm (3.4") long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
The cross measures 33 x 45 mm and hangs on a 50 cm box chain with a lobster clasp, so it rests on the upper chest. It is detailed enough to wear on top of a first communion outfit or a shirt, where the small symbols can be seen up close.
The polished stainless steel can be worn every day, including in the shower. For a young child, keep it for special days and supervised wear. It is made for a first communion, given by a godparent or grandparent, and also suits a confirmation or Easter for someone who never misses Mass.
Questions
What symbols are on the Eucharistic cross?
Seven: chalice, host, dove, grapes, wheat, Alpha and Omega, and Chi Rho, all signs linked to the Mass.
What does the Chi Rho mean?
It is a monogram made of the first two Greek letters of the word Christ, X (chi) and P (rho), used by Christians since the fourth century.
How big is the cross and how long is the chain?
The cross is 33 x 45 mm, on a 50 cm (about 20 in) box chain. It sits on the upper chest.
Is it a good first communion gift for a boy?
Yes. Its symbols of the Mass make it a direct reminder of the day, and the plain steel suits a boy as well as a girl.
Is a 50 cm chain too long for a child?
For a young child it hangs lower, around the middle of the chest. It can be worn on the day under supervision and then kept until the chain suits them.
What does the dove on the Eucharistic Cross stand for?
The Holy Spirit. At Mass the priest asks the Father to send the Spirit on the bread and wine, which is why the dove belongs beside the chalice and host.
The prayer
O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.

Its meaning
Seven signs of the Mass on one cross
Each sign on this cross points to the Eucharist. The chalice and the host recall the Last Supper, where Jesus took bread and wine. Wheat and grapes are what that bread and wine are made from. The dove is the Holy Spirit, called down on the gifts at Mass. Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, echo Revelation 22:13, where Christ calls himself the beginning and the end. The Chi Rho joins the first two Greek letters of the name Christ. Polished stainless steel, on a box chain with a...
Giving it as a gift
Made for a first communion: a godparent can give it on the day, or a grandparent at the celebration afterward. It also suits a confirmation, or an Easter gift for someone who never misses Mass.
