Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 50 cm (20").
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm (2") more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm (3.4") long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
The oval medal is 20 mm wide and 39 mm tall with its bail, and hangs on a 2.5 mm wheat chain of 55 cm, with a 5 cm extender. At 55 cm it falls at mid-chest: it shows over a T-shirt or stays hidden under a buttoned shirt, and the extender lets it drop a little lower over a sweater.
The stainless steel does not rust, so it can stay on in the shower, at the gym or during a work shift. The black finish stays discreet with a uniform or workwear, while silver and gold suit everyday clothes. It is a classic gift for a confirmation, from a godparent, or for Father's Day.
Questions
Is Saint Michael a saint or an angel?
Both. He is an archangel, and the Church honors him as Saint Michael. His feast day is September 29, shared with the archangels Gabriel and Raphael.
Can a non-Catholic wear a Saint Michael medal?
Yes. Saint Michael appears in the Bible, in the books of Daniel, Jude and Revelation, and Orthodox and Anglican Christians honor him too. Anyone who respects what the medal stands for can wear it.
What scene is shown on the Saint Michael medal?
Saint Michael the Archangel defeating the dragon, the scene of Revelation 12 where he casts out the forces of evil. Catholics wear his medal to ask for his protection, and he is the patron of police officers and soldiers.
Where does the Saint Michael medal sit on its 55 cm wheat chain?
At mid-chest. The 2.5 mm wheat chain is 55 cm (about 22 in), and the 5 cm extender lets it drop to 60 cm. The medal is 20 mm wide, 39 mm tall with the bail and 1.8 mm thick.
Which Saint Michael finish wears in the least: silver, gold or black?
Silver, since it is the polished steel itself. The gold and black finishes are on stainless steel too, so water is fine, but chlorine, perfume and rubbing against a uniform wear them faster.
Is it a good gift for a new police officer or a soldier?
Yes. It is often given to someone joining the police, a recruit leaving for basic training or a firefighter. The black finish stays discreet under a uniform.
The prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer to Saint Michael, composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886

Its meaning
Saint Michael, leader of the angels
Saint Michael is one of the archangels named in Scripture. In the Book of Revelation he leads the angels against the dragon, and Christian art has shown him ever since with a sword or spear, the dragon under his feet. For centuries Christians have turned to him in moments of danger and doubt. He is the patron of police officers, soldiers and paratroopers, and Catholics wear his medal to ask for his help. This oval medal shows the archangel in that pose and carries the words "Saint Michael protect us," in polished silver, gold or...
Giving it as a gift
Often given at confirmation, by a godparent, or for Father's Day. It also suits someone starting a job that puts them in harm's way, like a new police officer or a son leaving for basic training.
