The meaning
The symbol · Saint Michael
Saint Michael, defender in every struggle
Saint Michael is one of the archangels named in Scripture, and his name means Who is like God? He is shown with sword raised and wings open over the defeated enemy, as in the battle described in Revelation 12. The words around the edge, Saint Michael pray for us, are a short invocation asking his help.
Giving it as a gift
Often given at confirmation, to a godchild, to a father or to a friend who needs courage.
The prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer to Saint Michael, composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886
