Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 50 cm (20").
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm (2") more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm (3.4") long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
At 16 mm and 5 g, this is a small medal. On its 46 cm chain it sits just below the collarbone, and with the 5 cm extender it drops to about 51 cm, on the upper chest. It slips under a shirt or a uniform collar, or shows at an open neck.
It is antique silver-tone alloy, so take it off before a shower, a swim or a workout, and put it on after cologne. Small enough for a teenager at confirmation, it also suits a godchild, a father on Father's Day or a friend going through a hard time.
Questions
What does the inscription say?
St. Michael Pray For Us, around the rim of the medal. It is a short prayer asking the archangel to intercede.
Is the lettering readable on the 16 mm Saint Michael Prayer medal?
Yes. The darkened relief brings out the archangel and the words St. Michael Pray For Us, even on a 16 mm medal of 5 g.
Who is Saint Michael the patron saint of?
He is the traditional patron of police officers and soldiers. Many people also wear his medal as a reminder to ask for courage.
Will the antique finish of The Saint Michael Prayer last through workouts?
Not if it gets wet. Water and sweat dull the electroplated antique silver tone, so take the medal off before training, showering or swimming.
Is it big enough for a man?
Yes, if he wants something discreet. At 16 mm it stays hidden under a shirt; a larger Saint Michael medal would show more.
Why choose The Saint Michael Prayer as a confirmand's first religious medal?
It is small and simple, and Saint Michael is a common choice of confirmation saint. The invocation around the rim turns the medal into a short prayer to carry.
The prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer to Saint Michael, composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886

Its meaning
Saint Michael, defender in every struggle
Saint Michael is one of the archangels named in Scripture, and his name means Who is like God? In the Book of Revelation he leads the angels against the dragon, and the Church honors him as defender of the faithful, with Gabriel and Raphael, on September 29. He is shown with sword raised and wings open over the defeated enemy. The words around the edge, St. Michael Pray For Us, turn the medal into a short invocation that can be said at any moment of the day. This round 16 mm medal in antique silver-tone...
Giving it as a gift
