An open cross framing the face of Christ. A traditional devotional image, on a long box chain.
The meaning
The symbol · Cross
The face of Christ in the cross
Most crosses show either nothing or the whole body of Jesus. This one shows his face, an image with a long place in Christian prayer. The sixth Station of the Cross recalls the tradition of Veronica, who wiped the face of Jesus on the road to Calvary, and later devotion to the Holy Face grew out of meditation on that moment. Catholic and Orthodox Christians both keep images of the face of Christ and look at them as a way into prayer. Here the face is framed by the open lines of a cross, so the sign and the person are seen together, on a long box chain.
Giving it as a gift
A thoughtful Easter gift for someone who prays the Stations of the Cross during Lent. It also suits a young man or woman at confirmation who wants more than a plain cross.
