In Matthew 13, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a merchant who finds one pearl of great price and sells all he has to buy it. Because of that parable, Christians have long read the pearl as an image of what matters most. The wing belongs to the angels, the messengers Scripture places at the birth of Christ and at the empty tomb.
