A thin red cord, knotted by hand at intervals, holds a gold-tone Saint Benedict medal with red and black enamel. The saint on one side, the cross of protection on the other.
The meaning
The symbol · Saint Benedict
The cross of Saint Benedict
The Saint Benedict medal honors the sixth-century monk whose Rule shaped monastic life in the West. Its front shows the saint holding the cross and his Rule. On the back, the letters around the cross begin a Latin prayer: may the holy cross be my light, let not the dragon be my guide. Catholics wear it as a sign of trust in God's help against evil, and many keep it on through the day. Here a gold-tone alloy medal with red and black enamel hangs from a thin braided red cord, with a sliding knot that adjusts from about 15 to 28 cm.
Giving it as a gift
For a goddaughter at her confirmation, a mother on Mother's Day, or a friend who needs strength. A light everyday bracelet that fits most wrists and is easy to wear with a watch.
The prayer
Crux sacra sit mihi lux, non draco sit mihi dux. Vade retro Satana, numquam suade mihi vana. Sunt mala quae libas, ipse venena bibas. (May the holy cross be my light; let not the dragon be my guide. Begone, Satan, never suggest vain things to me. What you offer is evil; drink the poison yourself.)
