The medal of Saint Benedict on a broad 19 mm signet, with an aged finish that brings out every letter.
The meaning
The symbol · Saint Benedict
Every letter of the medal, on a ring
The reverse of the Saint Benedict medal is a puzzle of initials, and this signet reproduces it. The letters CSSML and NDSMD on the cross abbreviate "May the holy cross be my light, let not the dragon be my guide." Around the edge, VRSNSMV and SMQLIVB begin with "Vade retro Satana," a rejection of temptation. Pope Benedict XIV approved the medal in 1742, and the Jubilee design of 1880 fixed the form most often seen today. At 19 mm wide, with an aged finish that brings out the lettering, the face leaves room for every letter. It is 316 titanium steel in silver or gold tone, US sizes 7 to 15.
Giving it as a gift
A strong gift for a father or godfather, or for a young man at his confirmation who has taken Benedict as his saint. Christmas works too; check his size before ordering.
The prayer
Crux sacra sit mihi lux. Non draco sit mihi dux. (May the holy cross be my light. Let not the dragon be my guide.)
Latin verses on the Saint Benedict medal, found in a 1415 manuscript at Metten Abbey, Bavaria

The meaning
