The medal of Saint Benedict
The Saint Benedict medal is one of the best known Catholic medals. The front shows Saint Benedict holding the cross and his Rule. The back carries the cross with the letters C S P B, for Cross of the Holy Father Benedict, and the initials of a Latin prayer against evil. It is worn as a sign of trust in God's protection.
Giving it as a gift
Often given to a godchild at confirmation, or to a friend going through a hard season.
The prayer
Crux sacra sit mihi lux, non draco sit mihi dux. Vade retro Satana, numquam suade mihi vana. Sunt mala quae libas, ipse venena bibas. (May the holy cross be my light; let not the dragon be my guide. Begone, Satan, never suggest vain things to me. What you offer is evil; drink the poison yourself.)
Prayer of the Saint Benedict medal, in Latin with its English translation
