A cross with no ornament
The Latin cross, with its longer lower arm, is traditionally the shape of the cross on which Jesus died. Early Christians rarely showed it openly; by the fourth century it had become the sign of the faith. Wearing a plain cross says two things at once: what happened on Good Friday, and what Christians believe came after it. With no figure and no ornament, it belongs to every Christian tradition, which is why it is so often given to a godchild or a friend.
