The cross, given at a sacrament
The cross is the central sign of the Christian faith, recalling Christ's death and resurrection. At baptism, the priest, parents and godparents trace the sign of the cross on the forehead of the one being baptized, claiming that person for Christ. A plain cross given at a later sacrament, such as first communion or confirmation, recalls that first sign and the promise made that day. Many godparents choose one as a lasting reminder of the faith they agreed to help pass on.
