The cross of Saint Benedict
Saint Benedict of Nursia, father of Western monasticism, taught his monks to trust in the power of the cross. On the back of his medal, the letters C S S M L and N D S M D form a Latin prayer: may the holy cross be my light, let not the dragon be my guide. Set within a cross, the medal joins the sign of Christ to this old prayer of protection.
