Non nobis, the Templars' motto
The Knights Templar were founded in Jerusalem around 1119 to guard pilgrims on the roads of the Holy Land, and the Council of Troyes gave them a rule in 1129. Monks and knights at once, they took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The order is traditionally linked to the opening words of Psalm 115, "Non nobis, Domine": not to us, Lord, but to your name give glory. It is a line about serving without seeking credit. This round medal carries a central cross flanked by a sword and a staff, with the full Latin motto running around its border.
