Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 50 cm.
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
The cross is 4 x 2.5 cm and hangs on a 60 cm (23.6 in) chain, so it falls on the lower chest. The letters are easy to read over a plain T-shirt or a knit, and it slips out of sight under a shirt and tie for work. On a longer chain like this, it layers well with a shorter 45 cm chain.
The stainless steel does not rust, so it can stay on in the shower, at choir practice or at the gym. Gold-tone gives a warm, vintage look; silver feels lighter and modern. It fits a confirmation, Christmas, or someone coming back to faith.
Questions
What does Amazing Grace mean?
It is the title of a Christian hymn written by John Newton, an English slave-ship captain who became a clergyman. Grace means God's love given freely, not earned, and the song gives thanks for being forgiven and found again.
Which word runs down The Graced Cross and which goes across?
Amazing forms the upright and Grace forms the arms, so the hymn's title becomes the cross itself. The pendant is 4 cm tall and 2.5 cm wide.
How is The Graced Cross different from The Amazing Grace cross?
On The Graced Cross the two words themselves form the cross, in silver or gold, on a 60 cm chain. The Amazing Grace wraps the words around a cross, in silver only, on a fine cable chain.
What do the small stars on The Graced Cross add?
A touch of light, fitting a hymn about being lost and then found. It makes the cross a natural gift for someone who has found their way back to faith.
Will the gold version fade?
It is gold-tone stainless steel, which does not rust or turn your skin green. Keep it away from perfume and bleach and wipe it with a soft cloth to keep the shine.
Is it a good gift for someone who sings in a choir?
Yes. For a singer who knows the hymn by heart it is a personal choice, at a confirmation or at Christmas.
The prayer
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.
John Newton, "Amazing Grace" (1779)

Its meaning
How Amazing Grace came to America
Amazing Grace was written in England, but it found its lasting tune in America. In 1835, William Walker's Southern Harmony first printed the words with the melody called New Britain, the one most people know today. From there the hymn spread through Southern churches and into hymnals across the country. Its message is simple: the believer was lost and is found, by grace and not by merit. On this pendant the word Amazing runs down the upright and Grace across the arms. It stands 4 cm tall, in a silver or gold finish, on a...
Giving it as a gift
A thoughtful confirmation gift for a teenager who sings in the choir. At Christmas, choose gold or silver for a parent who still knows every verse by heart.
