A cross with no ornament
The Latin cross, with its longer lower arm, is traditionally the shape of the cross on which Jesus died. Early Christians rarely showed it openly; by the fourth century it had become the sign of the faith. Wearing a plain cross says two things at once: what happened on Good Friday, and what Christians believe came after it.
