Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 50 cm.
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
The oval medal measures 45 x 25 mm with its bail and hangs on a 60 cm (24 in) curb chain, so it falls on the lower chest. You can show it over a sweater or a dark top, or keep it under a shirt; at about 20 g in all, it has some weight without pulling.
The stainless steel does not rust or turn the skin green, so it can stay on in the shower and through the day. For a baptism, give it as a keepsake for later: a necklace is not for a baby. It also suits a confirmation, a godchild old enough to wear it or Mother's Day.
Questions
Who is on the Miraculous Medal?
Mary, as she appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris in 1830, her open hands sending out rays of grace. On the reverse are a cross over an M, two hearts and twelve stars.
What is this gold-tone Miraculous Medal made of?
The 60 cm chain is a 3 mm steel Cuban chain. The 45 x 25 mm medal is metal with a gold-tone finish; the supplier does not specify the metal.
Can this 45 x 25 mm Miraculous Medal stay on day and night?
It is made for daily wear, but take it off before a shower or a swim so the gold tone of the medal lasts.
Is the medal large?
Yes, fairly: 45 x 25 mm, easy to see at the end of the 60 cm chain. For something smaller, the Petite Miraculous Medal is lighter and more discreet.
Can a non-Catholic wear the Miraculous Medal?
Yes. It is a Catholic devotion to Mary, and anyone who respects what it stands for can wear it.
Why do Catholics often have a Miraculous Medal blessed?
Because it is a sacramental, a sign meant to lead to prayer, and many ask a priest or deacon to bless it. It arrives unblessed, and the blessing is a custom, not a requirement.
The prayer
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Its meaning
The Miraculous Medal
In 1830, at the Rue du Bac in Paris, Mary showed Saint Catherine Labouré the design of this medal and asked that it be struck. The front shows Mary with rays of grace falling from her hands, encircled by the prayer O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. The back carries the cross, the letter M and the hearts of Jesus and Mary, ringed by twelve stars. First struck in 1832, it took its popular name from the graces people reported. This oval gold-tone medal, 45 x 25 mm...
Giving it as a gift
For a godchild old enough to wear it, at a confirmation, or for a mother who prays the rosary, on Mother's Day or at Christmas. A sign of trust in Mary to wear every day.
