The Miraculous Medal and the cross
In 1830, in the chapel at the Rue du Bac in Paris, Saint Catherine Labouré said the Virgin Mary showed her the image for a medal: Mary with rays of grace falling from her hands. The medal spread quickly, and the many favors people reported after receiving it gave it the name Miraculous Medal. Around her runs a short prayer to Mary, conceived without sin. A sideways cross rests at the other end, keeping Christ beside his Mother. Painted ceramic beads in blue or pink florals link the small medal and the cross on a gold-plated stainless steel chain, 17 cm plus a 5 cm extender.
