The meaning
The symbol · Saint Michael
Saint Michael, leader of the angels
Saint Michael is one of the archangels named in Scripture. In the Book of Revelation he leads the angels against the dragon, and Christian art has shown him ever since with a sword or spear, the dragon under his feet. For centuries Christians have turned to him in moments of danger and doubt. He is the patron of police officers, soldiers and paratroopers, and Catholics wear his medal to ask for his help. This oval medal shows the archangel in that pose and carries the words "Saint Michael protect us," in polished silver, gold or black.
Giving it as a gift
Often given at confirmation, by a godparent, or for Father's Day. It also suits someone starting a job that puts them in harm's way, like a new police officer or a son leaving for basic training.
The prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer to Saint Michael, composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886
