The Holy Cross, honored on September 14
Each year on September 14, Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican Christians keep the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Tradition links it to Saint Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine, who is said to have found the cross in Jerusalem, and to the dedication of the church built over Calvary. The feast celebrates the cross as Christ's triumph, not only his suffering. Crosses set with stones in Christian art carry the same idea.
