John Newton's hymn, made into a cross
John Newton spent his early years at sea and became the captain of slave ships. After a violent storm in 1748 he turned to God, and he later became an Anglican clergyman in Olney, England. He wrote Amazing Grace for his parishioners, and it was published in the Olney Hymns in 1779. In later life he spoke out against the slave trade he had once served. The hymn tells his own story: grace given to someone who had not earned it. On this necklace the two words cross each other to form the cross, in a silver finish on a fine cable chain.
