Polished wood beads in warm reddish tones lead to a large Saint Benedict medal set in a gold-tone rim. The saint on one face, the cross of protection on the other.
The meaning
The symbol · Saint Benedict
Two faces of the Saint Benedict medal
One face of the medal shows Saint Benedict holding the cross and the Rule he wrote for his monks. The other carries the cross with the initials of a Latin prayer: may the holy cross be my light, let not the dragon be my guide, begone Satan. It is worn as a sign of trust in God and of protection against evil.
Giving it as a gift
Often given to a father, to a godson at confirmation, or to a friend facing a difficult time.
The prayer
Crux sacra sit mihi lux, non draco sit mihi dux. Vade retro Satana, numquam suade mihi vana. Sunt mala quae libas, ipse venena bibas. (May the holy cross be my light; let not the dragon be my guide. Begone, Satan, never suggest vain things to me. What you offer is evil; drink the poison yourself.)
