The back of the Saint Benedict medal is crowded with letters. On the arms of the cross, CSSML and NDSMD stand for a Latin verse: may the holy cross be my light, let not the dragon be my guide. Around the edge, VRSNSMV and SMQLIVB form a short rejection of temptation. Above it all sits a single word, PAX, peace, long a motto of the Benedictines. Catholics wear the medal to ask for God's help against evil. On this ring the whole design moves from the neck to the hand, in polished silver or gold tone, US sizes 7 to 12.
