The jeweled cross of early Christian art
Early Christian artists did not always show the cross bare. In Rome, the apse mosaic of Santa Pudenziana, from the late fourth century, places a great cross covered in jewels above Christ and the apostles. Art historians call this form the crux gemmata, the jeweled cross. It presented the cross as a sign of victory and of the heavenly city, which the Book of Revelation describes as built on foundations of precious stones. This small cross keeps that idea in a modern form, with a mixed gem inlay in black, blue, red or white, on an O-chain or a bead chain, 45 or 55 cm.
