Rue du Bac, Paris, 1830
In 1830, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity on the rue du Bac in Paris, a young novice named Catherine Labouré reported that the Virgin Mary had appeared to her. Mary asked her to have a medal struck, showing her with arms open and the words "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The first medals were made in 1832, and so many graces were credited to them that people began calling it the Miraculous Medal. Catherine was declared a saint in 1947. This version follows her description and hangs on a braided stainless steel chain, about 3.5 cm high.
