The crucifix keeps Christ on the cross, so the one who wears it looks at the Passion and not only at the empty sign. For Catholics, it is the cross of Good Friday, seen in full. Christian artists have long surrounded the head of Christ with light, the halo that marks holiness in icons and paintings.
