The lily of Mary on a shield
The fleur-de-lis is a stylized lily, and in Christian art the lily belongs to the Virgin Mary as a sign of purity, often held by the angel Gabriel in paintings of the Annunciation. Its three petals are also read as the Trinity. From the Middle Ages it marked the royal arms of France, and French settlers carried it to Quebec and Louisiana, where the flag of New Orleans still shows it. On this ring the lily stands inside a shield, the way it appears in heraldry. It is polished stainless steel, in US sizes 7 to 13.
