The meaning
The symbol · Celtic Cross
Wide arms filled with interlace
This cross widens toward the ends of its arms, and every arm is filled with interlace. Knotwork of this kind came into Christian art through the monasteries of Ireland and Britain. The Lindisfarne Gospels, made in Northumbria in the early eighth century, set whole pages of it before each Gospel. The monks took a pattern their people already loved and placed it around the cross. Many men of Irish, Scottish or Welsh descent wear such a piece for both faith and family history. Here the front is polished, the back is matte, and the pendant measures 45.5 by 34 mm on a 60 cm box chain.
Giving it as a gift
Give it to your husband on Father's Day, or to a brother who still talks about his trip to Ireland. Its size makes it right for a man who likes jewelry with some weight.
The prayer
Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me.
Saint Patrick's Breastplate, hymn translation by Cecil Frances Alexander (1889)
