Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 20".
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 2" more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 3.4" long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
The pendant is about 3.5 cm high and 3 cm wide, on a braided chain: visible enough to recognize the image of Mary, small enough to wear every day under or over a blouse or shirt. Many people keep it under clothing, close to the heart, and let it show on Sundays.
The pendant and the chain are tin, so take it off before a shower or a swim. It is a traditional gift from a godmother for a first communion or a confirmation, and a natural Mother's Day gift for a mother or grandmother with a devotion to Mary.
Questions
What is the Miraculous Medal?
A Catholic medal of the Virgin Mary with her arms open, first struck in Paris in 1832 after the visions of Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830.
Is the Miraculous Emblem large enough to see Mary's open arms?
Yes. At about 3.5 cm high and 3 cm wide (1.4 x 1.2 in), the figure of Mary with her arms open reads clearly, resting on the collarbone or the chest.
Is the Miraculous Medal a good luck charm?
No. For Catholics it expresses confidence in Mary and is a reminder to pray, not an object that works by itself.
What prayer is written around the Miraculous Medal?
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. It runs around the edge of the medal, as in the design Saint Catherine Labouré described in 1830.
Is the Miraculous Emblem a good Mother's Day gift for a mom devoted to Mary?
Yes. Catholics wear the Miraculous Medal as a sign of trust in Mary's care, which makes it a gentle gift from children to their mother.
What is the braided chain of the Miraculous Emblem like?
A tin chain with braided links, which gives it more texture than a plain cable chain. Like the medal, it does not rust or turn your skin green.
The prayer
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Its meaning
Rue du Bac, Paris, 1830
In 1830, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity on the rue du Bac in Paris, a young novice named Catherine Labouré reported that the Virgin Mary had appeared to her. Mary asked her to have a medal struck, showing her with arms open and the words "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The first medals were made in 1832, and so many graces were credited to them that people began calling it the Miraculous Medal. Catherine was declared a saint in 1947. This version follows her...
Giving it as a gift
A godmother might choose it for a first communion or a confirmation, as Catholic families have long done. For a mother or grandmother with a devotion to Mary, it is a natural Mother's Day gift.
