Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 20".
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 2" more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 3.4" long: count how many fit along your strip.

How to wear it
The round medal is 30 mm across and hangs on a 60 cm curb chain about 3 mm wide. At that length it falls on the lower chest, so it can sit over a sweater or stay out of sight under a shirt and tie. It weighs 18.3 g, enough to feel present without pulling.
The stainless steel does not rust, so it can stay on through showers, workouts and long days on the road. Black is the most understated finish; silver and gold show the engraving more. It is a natural gift before a first car, a move away to study, a confirmation or Father's Day.
Questions
Why was Saint Christopher's July 25 feast taken off the universal calendar in 1969?
Because so little is known for certain about his life. He was not removed as a saint: Catholics still ask for his prayers, as the words Pray For Us on this medal do.
How low does the Saint Christopher Medal hang on its 3 mm curb chain?
To the lower chest. The curb chain is 60 cm (about 24 in) long and about 3 mm wide, so the medal shows over a T-shirt.
Which Saint Christopher Medal finish shows the engraving most clearly?
All three do. The engraving is filled in contrast on the silver, gold and black finishes, so the saint, the halo and the words Pray For Us stand out on each.
Can I wear it every day, even in the shower or at the gym?
Yes. The medal and the chain are stainless steel, which does not rust or turn your skin green.
Is the Saint Christopher Medal a fitting gift for a godson leaving home to study?
Yes. Saint Christopher is the patron of travelers, and his medal is traditionally given before a journey, to a new driver or to someone leaving home.
Can I ask a priest to bless the Saint Christopher Medal before a trip?
Yes. Many Catholics have a travel medal blessed before setting off, and a priest or deacon can do it, often after Mass. It arrives unblessed, and the blessing is a custom, not a requirement.
The prayer
Saint Christopher, pray for us.

Its meaning
Saint Christopher, patron of travelers
According to tradition, Christopher carried a child across a dangerous river and found that he had borne Christ himself, which is why his name means Christ-bearer. He became the patron of travelers, and his medal has long been carried by drivers, pilgrims and anyone far from home. Catholics wear it to ask his prayers before a journey, and the words Pray For Us around the image turn the medal into a short prayer. This round stainless steel medal shows the saint carrying the Child Jesus through the water, in silver, gold or black, on a...
