Two bars, from Calvary to Lorraine
The cross of Lorraine has two crossbars, the upper one shorter. Christians traditionally read that upper bar as the sign Pilate had fixed above Jesus: "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews" (John 19:19). The double cross passed to the dukes of Anjou, and René II, Duke of Lorraine, carried it on his banner at the Battle of Nancy in 1477. On July 1, 1940, the Free French chose it as their emblem, and it became a sign of the French Resistance. Here it stands on a classic signet in silver or gold finish, with a black enamel accent, US sizes 7 to 15.
