The medal of Saint Benedict, with its cross and the initials of an old Latin prayer, on a box chain. A devotion Christians have kept for centuries.
The meaning
The symbol · Saint Benedict
Saint Benedict, his cross and his Rule
On the front of the Saint Benedict medal, the saint traditionally holds a cross in his right hand and the book of his Rule in his left. Beside him are a cup and a raven with a loaf of bread, recalling the poisoned wine and poisoned bread that Saint Gregory the Great says were used in attempts on his life. The back carries the cross and the initials of Latin prayers that reject evil and ask the cross to be a light. Benedict XIV gave the medal papal approval in 1742, and it is still widely worn. This round medal comes in polished silver or gold tone on a box chain.
Giving it as a gift
Give it to a godchild at confirmation, or to your father on Father's Day. It is plain enough to wear every day under a shirt.
The prayer
Crux sacra sit mihi lux. Non draco sit mihi dux. (May the holy cross be my light. Let not the dragon be my guide.)
Latin verses on the Saint Benedict medal, found in a 1415 manuscript at Metten Abbey, Bavaria
