Saint Benedict on a wooden rosary
Saint Benedict, who died around 547 at Monte Cassino, wrote the Rule still followed by Benedictine monks. The medal named after him traditionally shows a cross bearing the letters CSSML and NDSMD, the initials of a Latin verse that ask the holy cross to shine as a light. The Church approved its use in the eighteenth century, and Catholics have joined it to many rosaries since. Here it sits beside a wooden crucifix of 5.5 by 3.5 cm, on a rosary of natural wood beads 59 cm around. You can choose black, light or natural wood, depending on the person.
Giving it as a gift
A sturdy choice for a godson's confirmation, or for a young adult moving out on their own. At Easter, the three wood tones let you match it to the person who receives it.
The prayer
Crux sacra sit mihi lux. Non draco sit mihi dux. (May the holy cross be my light. Let not the dragon be my guide.)
Latin verses on the Saint Benedict medal, found in a 1415 manuscript at Metten Abbey, Bavaria
