The saint who carried Christ
Christopher means "Christ-bearer." In the legend retold in the Golden Legend, a man of great size served travelers by carrying them across a river, and one night the child on his shoulders grew so heavy he could barely reach the other bank. The child was Christ, who told him he had carried the world and its maker. Christopher, an early martyr, became the patron of travelers, and his medal is clipped to car visors and slipped into suitcases. On this oval medal his figure stands out in gold tone against the silver, on a box chain of 55 or 70 cm.
